3rd Week of road trip; March 31 - April 8

Austin to New Orleans gave us time to listen to the first two sessions of conference and join with others all over the world in a solemn assembly to sustain a new prophet and first presidency and apostles.  A historic conference where many changes were made in leadership and administration.  Blessed to be living at this time and being able to experience all the good the world has to offer.

New Orleans
(March 31-April 2)

We were told the French Quarter was where the locals go and was a good place to buy souvenirs and to listen to some good Jazz music.  We walked through this area and saw the market set up with all kinds of everything to buy in an open market.  We walked past bars and heard the music through the doors and watched all sorts of people walking the street.  Not feeling comfortable we quickly walked around the block and headed back to skyscrapers where our resort was.   Decided we didn't want to be where the locals hung out, we stuck with the tourists.

Easter Parade

 Elvis, Elvis and more Elvis!

Everyone going crazy as the floats, decorated cars, and those walking threw out beads and more beads.  Howard had so much fun trying to get the beads thrown to him.   As we were told, New Orleans has a celebration for everything, if not they will create a celebration.  Always a party going on.

"In my Easter Bonnet, with all the frills up on it.......in the Easter Parade."  A whole new view on what this song means.

Howard waiting at Cafe Du Monde for his  beignets.

A marriage was performed in the cathedral and then the wedding party paraded down the streets, going down Burbon  Street.

We took a bus tour around New Orleans and learned a lot about the history of the area and saw the colorful houses, parks, art and buildings of the city.

A city park displayed the art and creative ways to display discarded items.  What to do with no longer used cellos and violins?  Answer, pile them all up in a pond in the park.  This latter goes into a window of a suspended brick section of a building.  What is holding it up:

Cemeteries
Because New Orleans in below sea level cemeteries need to be above ground.  We walked to Cemetery 2 and visited Cemetery 3 on a bus tour.

Our resort was perfect...right on the beach with a perfect view of the beach and the pools and  of the bridges from the back side of the resort.  2 indoor pools and 2 out door pools, a lazy river and kids splash pool and hot tubs.  The beach and pools were loaded because of Spring break.  But we did manage to sit a spell on the beach and enjoy the beauty and to take a stroll along the boardwalk later in the evening when others had cleared out.  We ate fish and chips at the restaurant on the pier, Joe's Crab house.  Yup, we can now say that we spent Spring break at Daytona Beach!

Sunrise on the Beach

Our last morning at the beach we woke up to the sound of shouting.  Looking out the window we saw two fishermen in the ocean.  Amazing that they were yelling so loud at each other.  But, wait, there is something else going on out there.  As we walked out onto the balcony we noticed a group of people gathered on the beach grouping together doing something.  Looking for crabs?  No, a closer look reveled it was the Marines doing drills along the coast in the early morning hours.  No way could we be upset at being woke up by those working to keep us free.  Thank you, our dedicated military.  God bless.

Our stay in this part of the world was short and sweet and filled with activities the whole time.  We arrived in the early evening and had enough time to walk around the resort and check out Lake Marion.  Our balcony looked right into the lake and it was hard not to keep looking for the snakes and alligators that the posted sign alluded were lingering near.  The pool was a much safer place to hang out the next day after we finished our drive through the Congaree National Park.

Edisto Beach, South Carolina
Ocean Ridge Resort
(April 6 - 8)

This beautiful spot in the world was quiet and had the southern hospitality as people would wave to you. It pretty much rained the whole time we were there but we put on our rain jackets and walked along the beach looking for the "12 sisters" or dolphins who came to the point of the island every day in between high and low tide to feed.  They must of been afraid of the rain for we didn't see them the 2 days we searched them out.

The balcony was screened  in to keep the summer bugs out, we are guessing.  The pond was a beautiful sight and was bug free this time of year.  At night these white herons would perch in the trees for their evening sleep and would stay until late the next morning.

Jelly fish had washed up all over the beach and didn't make it back with the tide.  Left to die.  So many are here this time of year because it is their mating season.

Church & Houses

Most homes (even mobile homes)  and resorts were on stilts because of the frequent hurricanes that brings so much flooding to this area.
